It's always good to take a break from writing and work on something different for a while. Usually, this doesn't entail anything more than taking a break from the computer and focusing on something else for an hour or so. But sometimes, you want to take a real break where you don't think about your essay at all--say, for instance, if it's due in three days and you can't even think of an opening sentence yet. But this is not always a good idea. There is a time and a place for all of this, and there are rules to follow in order to stay productive when you take such breaks. For starters, think about the kinds of things that interest you. If you don't know, ask someone who does (friends, family, teachers). Also consider what kinds of things you like doing during your free time. If it's writing things, then wait until after your break to do so. If it's something else, such as drawing or playing music, then do that during your break. Another thing to consider is the length of time that you have during which you are allowed to stop what you are doing. If it's three minutes, then don't spend the whole time just staring at the screen thinking about how hard it is to write an essay. Take something else with you so that you can do something with your hands for a bit. Of course, sometimes you only have a few minutes to kill, so it doesn't matter whether or not your essay is done. But if you have a lot of time to kill, then think about what you really want to do. There is no reason to stay glued to the computer screen for 15 minutes when you could be doing something productive instead. Of course, this depends on where you are in the process of writing your essay. If it's halfway through, then all of these suggestions are pretty useless. But if it's still early in the process, taking some time off can make things easier for you later on. When taking a break like this, it's important not to give up on your essay completely--even if some parts of it are still not done. Just pick something else to do for a while (and maybe put it off until tomorrow), and give your essay another go in the future. Also, if you ever find yourself completely stuck on an essay, then take some time off to think about it. Don't let the fact that you plan to work on it again in the future distract you from what's happening around you now. If, after taking some time to think about what you want to do during your break, you decide that there is nothing better for you than sitting in front of the computer screen nursing your unfinished essay, then consider doing just that. cfa1e77820
